We’ve got answers!
Rowing an ocean is a huge endeavor, and for most people a pretty unfamiliar one! If you have a question you’d like to see answered here, contact us and we will be sure to add it to the list.

With over 5,000 calories burned each day, eating will be a huge chore! Most of our calories will come from freeze-dried meals (re-hydrated with hot water from a camp stove) and daily snack bags— a personalized gallon bag of snacks for each rower that day. We will also have special treats for important milestones on the row.
Be on the lookout for opportunities to sponsor a team member’s daily snack bag, complete with a note from you to help inspire that day!

We will use a desalination device to turn ocean water into drinkable water. We will learn how to repair it in the event it breaks, and will also have a backup manual desalinator.

Emma is an R45 made by Rannoch Adventure. She is approximately 28.5 feet long, 5.75 feet wide, and 6 feet tall from the keel to the top of the cabin (which makes for a cabin just tall enough to sit upright in). She will be about 2866 lbs when fully loaded for the race.

Our boat Emma is self-righting and designed to withstand massive waves and high winds. We’ll train with an experienced ocean rowing coach to know how to handle these tough conditions to keep both us and Emma safe.
We will also be using our radio to communicate with the World’s Toughest Row organizers. They will be able to alert us to any weather systems heading our way so we can prepare and navigate accordingly.

We do need special training, and certainly special gear! Each month in our email newsletter we’re featuring a different piece of equipment or training required for our journey. You can learn more about them on our Gear & Glossary page, or you can subscribe to our newsletter at the bottom of the page.

In a bucket! Simple, but certainly not glamorous. And also not as bad as you might think?

With only about 90 minutes of sleep at a time, we will suffer from sleep deprivation, sea sickness, salt sores, blisters, and other ailments. Don’t worry, we also expect to have a lot of fun, too!
